Vice President, Economic Council of the CDU
Friedrich Merz is Senior Counsel at the international law firm Mayer Brown LLP. In June 2019 he has been elected Vice President of the Economic Council of the Christian Democratic Union (“Wirtschaftsrat der CDU e.V.”), representing the interests of its members towards politicians, administration and public.
From 2009 to 2019 Friedrich Merz was Chairman of Atlantik-Bruecke e.V., an association established to develop and strengthen the ties between the US and Germany. Moreover, he serves as Chairman of the supervisory boards of BlackRock Asset Management Deutschland AG, WEPA Industrieholding SE and Flughafen Köln Bonn GmbH.
Between 1994 and 2009, Friedrich Merz held various political roles including member of the European Parliament, member of Germany’s Federal Parliament (Bundestag), Chairman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Christian Social Union (CSU) parliamentary group from 2000 to 2002 and Deputy Chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group from 1998 to 2000 and from 2002 until 2004.
Friedrich Merz has been educated in law and started his professional career in business at the German Association of the Chemical Industry in 1986.
