A century has passed since women in both the US and Germany have gained the right to vote and five women have already announced their candidacy for the US presidential elections for 2020. Yet in Germany we have reached the lowest percentage of female parliament members since 1998.
Furthermore in finance, women-owned firms still make up less than 1% of the 70 trillion assets under management in North America. Looking at leadership, the number of female CEOs in the S&P 500 has actually gone down from 32 to 24 in the last two years and women in Germany only make up 9% of board members of the top 200 firms. All these numbers contradict the rising percentage of women graduating from colleges, law and business schools.
Studies on gender diversity have consistently showed that teams including women perform better in terms of sales and profits than male-dominated teams. Should we therefore implement regulations like female quotas to facilitate the process of women empowerment?
The panel explores the glass ceiling that prevents women from rising as a female leader in various fields such as politics, finance and science. Are these barriers created by legislative regulations including family leave or rather social norms, like the so-called “old-boys-club”?
